Hela Wedakama is Sri Lanka's indigenous healing tradition, drawn from local plants, minerals, and royal-era practices, whereas Ayurveda originated in India and became institutionalized alongside it.
Sri Lankan indigenous medicine features highly specialized, family-inherited branches (Paramparika Wedakama) that have shown remarkable practical success in managing complex conditions. This includes dedicated treatments for fracture healing (Wedum-Pidum), snakebite neutralizing, paralysis (stroke recovery), skin diseases, and early-stage tumors or cancers. While Western medicine often focuses on managing the symptoms of chronic diseases through lifetime medication, Hela Wedakama aims to detoxify and balance the body as a whole to treat the root cause.
Medical experts strongly advise against mixing Western drugs and strong herbal decoctions (Kasaya) at the same time without professional guidance. Because certain active plant compounds can interact chemically with Western pharmaceuticals (especially blood thinners or diabetes medications), it can cause harmful toxicity or significantly reduce the effectiveness of the treatments. This is an issue where patients must exercise the utmost caution.
